Garda vetting

What is it?

• Garda vetting is a background check completed by the National Vetting Bureau. When the bureau receive a vetting application, they check to see whether that person has a criminal record.
• It is a way of ensuring the safety of children and vulnerable members of society, when they come into contact with people who work with them.

Who needs it?

• Garda vetting – The National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012-2016 make it mandatory for people working with children or vulnerable adults to be vetted by the Garda Síochána National Vetting Bureau. As a result, all club members, coaches and volunteers must be vetted. Vetting is carried out through the clubs affiliated federation.
• The Acts stipulate that a relevant organisation shall not permit any person to undertake relevant work or activities on behalf of the organisation, unless the organisation receives a vetting disclosure from the National Vetting Bureau in respect of that person.
• Garda vetting is conducted on behalf of registered organisations only and is not conducted for individual persons on a personal basis.
• If you are seeking employment or intending to volunteer with an organisation that conducts relevant work, you may be asked to submit an application to be vetted.
• You may submit an application to be vetted either by E-vetting or Paper Application.

• Garda vetting of individuals can only be accessed through the National Governing Body.
